loveless world

The world of Loveless is a little different than our own. This is because of two main factors: cat-like features and the existence of Fighters and Sacrifices. I'll explain each below:

Cat-like Ears and Tails

In the world of Loveless, everyone is born with cat ears and a cat tail. When people lose their virginity, they also lose their ears and tail. Little is known about this system. For example, it never details what actually happens with the ears and tail, nor does it define what exactly counts as sex.

Not all tails are the same, as is true for cats. Some are longer, some thicker, some stubby.

A Fighter and Sacrifice

A fighter and their sacrifice is a duo that normally has to work together and is made stranger by the presence of the other. Each team has a name that seems to be based on the name Sacrifice's true name. For example, Ritsuka and his true fighter will be called Loveless, and Soubi is considered Beloved's fighter.

Fighters and Sacrifices that have bonded share an invisible connection. Those we've seen in the series look like a thin wire, visible only when one of the pair concentrates on it. They can see connections between other pairs.

The fighter is just that: he fights in what's considered a word battle. Words can be best thought of as spells. A sacrifice not only strengths a fighter but is the one to take the damage. That's why a fighter must protect their sacrifice. The battle is considered lost if a sacrifice is restricted to the point of total weakness. If one of the teams quits, they can no longer fight the same team again which soon decreases their ability to be a fighter or sacrifice.

It is possible to fight on auto, meaning the fighter will fight alone. This puts him at a huge disadvantage and isn't recommended as their offensive power is cut in half.

If one side of the team dies, neither fighter nor sacrifice should find another partner. Doing so is considered shameful for both parties. It also comes with drawbacks. If a team has different names, it's easier to separate or bind them, increasing damage.

There's also a school for fighters. Ritsu's school is called Shikiseigakuen.

Certain words are used. Soubi declares a fight 'A battle of spells'. 'Battle system expand' seems to create a special arena that keeps everything outside of it safe. This is called a battle domain. Stronger fighters can create larger domains.

After the fight starts, the teams take turns casting spells.

*In the manga and anime series, Ritsuka's real fighter is never revealed. However, there is a light novel called Loveless - Ephemeral Bonds, in which a boy named Seiryo appears in front of Ritsuka claiming to be his fighter. Unfortunately, I can't find a single translation anywhere, and it's very possible that Seimei is using the guy to play with Ritsuka. So, I won't play from a canonpoint involving that discovery, but just as an FYI.
